Prince Albert I Medal recipient 2025 - Prof. Nadia Pinardi

25 Nadia Pinardi

Prof. Nadia Pinardi, Full Professor of Physical Oceanography at the University of Bologna, Department of Physics and Astronomy, is the Prince Albert I Medal recipient 2025. She is an internationally recognized and highly respected ocean scientist whose research has made an outstanding contribution to defining the principles, methods and applications of ocean modelling and forecasting.

She has made seminal contributions in physical oceanography over the last 40 years, advancing both geophysical fluid dynamics and ocean predictability, integrating innovative methodologies in observations, numerical modelling and data assimilation. Her dedication and contagious enthusiasm for oceanography and science pushed the frontiers of interdisciplinary science and prediction in the world's coastal areas.

Prof. Pinardi is a visionary oceanographer with a unique sense and ability to leverage collaborations with diverse stakeholders and build trans-disciplinary communities. Her pioneering contribution to operational oceanography, her dedicated services through international governing bodies (i.e. UN Decade Collaborative Center for Coastal Resilience) are remarkable achievements that have and continue to greatly benefit the ocean sciences and society for many years to come.

The medal was presented to Prof. Pinardi by IAPSO President, Dr Hans van Haren, on 23 July 2025, 15:00-17:00, during the IAPSO Medal Ceremony, at the IAMAS/IACS/IAPSO Joint Assembly, Busan, Republic of Korea, BEXCO, Convention Hall 2F, Room C205. On that occasion, Prof. Pinardi gae the Memorial Lecture entitled "Transforming marine science into trustable and societally relevant knowledge".

Goal

To promote the study of the oceans and the interactions that take place at its boundaries with the sea floor, coastal environment and atmosphere, through the use of physics, chemistry, mathematics and biogeochemisty.

Values

IAPSO gives importance to involving scientists and students from developing countries in oceanographic activities.
