LETTER TO NC AND EC

OPEN LETTER No. 4 • April 9, 2009

Dear IAPSO Colleagues:

Time is fast approaching for you and your students to register at the reduced rate for MOCA-09: April 17, 2009. Hence this friendly reminder.

The MOCA scientific program is going to be varied and very exciting. Over 2000 abstracts have been accepted for the assembly, and these will be presented in 53 symposia altogether. IAPSO is involved in most of the joint symposia, and is also sponsoring 9 of its own. All of the symposia that IAPSO is involved in are scheduled for the first week of the assembly (July 20-24). At this stage, I would like to thank our SG, Johan Rodhe, for his extensive service in organizing the scientific program for MOCA.

Thanks also to Fred Camfield, the IAPSO Treasurer, as well as to Johan, for arranging the IAPSO travel grants for students and other young career scientists from developing countries.

A particularly important day for IAPSO is Wednesday, July 22. Starting at 8.30 there will be a General Business Meeting (GBM) for the NCs and IAPSO EC. An agenda will be circulated before the assembly. Of special interest at the GBM will be overview presentations by the leaders of three IAPSO-SCOR Working Groups: Thermodynamics and Equation of State for Sea Water, Deep Ocean Exchange with the Shelf, and OceanScope, a recently funded WG which will have its first meeting in Montreal, just prior to MOCA-09.

After the GBM, we shall have the pleasure of hearing the Albert Medal Memorial Lecture by Professor Harry Bryden, starting at 10.30, July 22. There will be no parallel IAPSO symposia that morning; hence we expect an excellent attendance for this lecture. In the evening we shall have a no-host IAPSO dinner, at a nearby restaurant -- details to be provided at the registration desk in Montreal.

In closing, I look forward to seeing many of you again in Montreal at MOCA-09!

With best wishes,

Lawrence A. Mysak
