1.Prince Albert I Medal winner 2025

Prof. Nadia Pinardi, Full Professor of Physical Oceanography at the University of Bologna, Department of Physics and Astronomy, is the Prince Albert I Medal recipient 2025. She is an internationally recognized and highly respected ocean scientist whose research has made an outstanding contribution to defining the principles, methods and applications of ocean modelling and forecasting.

She has made seminal contributions in physical oceanography over the last 40 years, advancing both geophysical fluid dynamics and ocean predictability, integrating innovative methodologies in observations, numerical modelling and data assimilation. Her dedication and contagious enthusiasm for oceanography and science pushed the frontiers of interdisciplinary science and prediction in the world's coastal areas.

Prof. Pinardi is a visionary oceanographer with a unique sense and ability to leverage collaborations with diverse stakeholders and build trans-disciplinary communities. Her pioneering contribution to operational oceanography, her dedicated services through international governing bodies (i.e. UN Decade Collaborative Center for Coastal Resilience) are remarkable achievements that have and continue to greatly benefit the ocean sciences and society for many years to come.

The medal will be presented to Prof. Pinardi by IAPSO President, Dr Hans van Haren, on 23 July 2025, 15:00-17:00, during the IAPSO Medal Ceremony, at the IAMAS/IACS/IAPSO Joint Assembly, Busan, Republic of Korea, BEXCO, Convention Hall 2F, Room C205. On that occasion, Prof. Pinardi will give the Memorial Lecture entitled " Transforming marine science into trustable and societally relevant knowledge ".

2. Early Career Scientist Medal winner 2025

The 2025 IAPSO Early Career Scientist medallist in physical oceanography is Dr. Adele K. Morrison (Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University, Australia).

This is awarded in recognition of her groundbreaking contributions to Southern Ocean dynamics, particularly her work on the role of mesoscale eddies in governing ocean circulation, the transport of heat and carbon, and the interaction between ocean currents and Antarctic ice shelves.

The Early Career Scientist medal will be presented to Dr. Morrison by IAPSO President on 23 July 2025, 15:00-17:00, during the IAPSO Medal Ceremony, at the IAMAS/IACS/IAPSO Joint Assembly, Busan, Republic of Korea, BEXCO, Convention Hall 2F, Room C205.  On that occasion, Dr. Morrison will give a talk entitled "Dynamical linkages between distinct oceanic regimes around Antarctica".

3. Eugene LaFond Medal 2025 - reminder

The Eugene LaFond Medal is awarded to an ocean scientist from a developing country making a presentation (poster or oral) in an IAPSO-sponsored or co-sponsored symposium at the IUGG or IAPSO assemblies.

Next meeting at which the LaFond Medal will be awarded is the IAMAS/IACS/IAPSO Joint Assembly in Busan, Republic of Korea, 20-25 July 2025.

Prospective candidates are invited to identify their presentation as being eligible for the LaFond Medal. This is done by sending an email, including a brief CV describing their education and research activities, to the IAPSO Secretary General (sg@iapso-ocean.org) and copied to the President (president@iapso-ocean.org). Please specify in the email the title of the presentation, the symposium in which it will be presented, and in what form (oral or poster).

Applications must be submitted before the start of the IAMAS/IACS/IAPSO Joint Assembly.
